Chakra Prints
This project allowed me to use the image ideas from a longer book to develop individual chakras. In this case, the root chakra. The base is founded on the color red and the spirialing energy associated with the Kundalini power which resides there. As it emerges up the spine, it unravels. Also because earth is connected with this charka there is green color as well for the connection to the life force of the earth. The classical character is shown in sanskrit, but also a character or a gesture drawing which shows the basic energies of the work.
The second chakra is all about water. The hope here was to give the sense of a rock being dropped into the water and the ripples or waves which pulse outward from the center. As a chakra it is both male and female thus the combination of the two triangles together making the star. This union of male and female is the root of procreation. We swim in our mother's womb, but before that our parents swim together when they unite. All life arose from this initial watery source.
The third chakra is fire. The yellow at the center is a reference to the sun. The sun which energizes the world, plants, food and so forth then energizes us. At our center is a great burning fire called life. We also heat our world from this central location. As we do the rays of life emerge and wander out into the universe.

The forth chakra has always been a challenge for me. On the one hand it is the heart and center of the system, on the other hand there is more to go up the process to the top in union with the infinite. Thus the chakra has both the complete connection to all others and stands alone in its beauty. The heart chakra is air, but also life, emotion, and fire. The heart is passion in the fullness of being. The attempt here was to present all the previous energies as united, as well as the union possible with the beloved as seen in the star at the center so similar to number three. Green is the fullness of life and at the center of our visual awareness. We see more shades of green than any other color. And so this chakra celebrates this fact and meditation.
The fifth chakra is the chakra of sound. The playground of creation is the vibrations which we make and pulse out into the universe at large. This chakra has both breadth and depth in its vast energies. All the letters of the alphabet are represented in the small bundles of energy which eminate from the center. It is on the one hand a rich blue, and oh the other a grey color of words wander out across the ethers.
The sixth chakra is the ultimate union of all things in the act of pure seeing. This work is the merging of multiple veiws into the one. But because the two circles overlap there is still form. The overlapping of the waves of energy creates form. And so we see the energies which drive form into being from the abstract oneness of seeing. This is my favorite of chakras for its vast connection to all that is.
Finally as the energies reach beyond form they unite with the ultimate ground of being. The ultimate unity behind all things. There is emptiness here, yet at the same time, there is pure intellegence of being. The journey being complete all the other wheels, or chakras, are multiplied to the infinite as they surround the central icon of the ground of being, the trident. The trident is the symbol of shiva and shakti together with nothing left of their physicality. Thus it is but a resonation of being, like thunder after a lightening strike. The ephemeral aspects of life gone, yet the rumble reminds us of what had been.
When these seven are seen together from bottom to top. The line that connects them, the ida and pingala, connect the root to the crown. They are one and yet seven. They are united and separate. The hope is that each one as a separate meditation will also open doorways to more knowledge and awareness which is not written of here.
