Elementia means the elements, the elemental particles, the fabric of the universe.  Awareness of the substructure of the universe as a playground of particles and waves ad-infinatum still sets physicists on their ear trying to understand its ground and evolution.   Thus this world is Magicos, the logic of magic.  The feminine ground of being, ‘Tia, is in constant vibrational relationship with the masculine understanding, ‘Cos, of her wonder.  The universe is infinitely vast and wounderous at the super-structural level as well as infinitely delicate and beautiful on the sub atomic level. 

 

The universe, when observed like this, acts as a randomly as mystery permits us to understand.  Understanding in and of itself is a repeating pattern of our thoughts driving us to question and to limit our knowledge with obsession in our answers.  Paradigms of knowledge around the structure of the universe are constantly being challenged opening us to new depths of observation and interaction with awe.  Thus this book was conceived as a series of brilliant mistakes, random musings in the playground of the print studio.

 

For plate one, a meditation the night before burst forth on the plate in less than 3 hours, the ‘big bang’ was conceived out of the practicing silence.  In plate three, a disturbance occurred by another in the studio who opened a door mid way through a dusting of resin.  ‘Wind’ emerged as a plate within 45 minutes.  After nine weekends of making accidents on plates, they organized themselves into a story of how the universe was created.  Or perhaps they emerged in that special middle ground between intuition and control where dances my aesthetic. 

 

The big bang emerging out of the nothing, leads to solidity of stone which blasts into the mystery of the cosmic wind.  From there our world began to solidify and flow with the water from which life emerged.  Crisscrossing our universe in a mysterious web are the fibers of electricity which animates everything from the small to the large.  We spin with constant motion from the stars to the clouds to the water in our lakes.  These whirlpools and whirlwinds are constantly forcing us to move through this universe of matter changing all the time.  We have come to understand this world; we have reached into the depths of mystery, the quantum field and into the infinite reaches of space to the quantum singularity known as a black hole. 

 

This is but one telling of the great story of life, the elemental knowledge and awareness which we as humans have dared to grasp at and seek for meaning.  The matrix cannot tell us who we are.  We can only wonder while it can only reveal the fabric within which we are constantly moving and pulsing awareness out/inward in all directions.  This book is solid and permeable at the same time, if we look close enough at it.  The sand, dirt, inks and paper all vibrate with that spark.  It electrifies the hand and mind to deeper musings of what it all means. 

 

This magical fabric is also affected by the very act of knowing, of looking, of perceiving its warp and weft. The cloth that is formed today may be gone by tomorrow in the act of our thinking and manipulating its structure.  This aesthetic journey is a highway into the depths of outer and inner space.  If we take our time, contemplate the process, we become creators, responsible at all moments for this vast interconnected web of life.  We can dance with the gods of creation, the random generators of constant variety so as to hold the beautiful and ephemeral moments as we experience them.

 

Elemential Magicos has won recognition at several shows inluding the 2008 Science and Art Show at Colorado State University.  The images here are the artist proof version of the book.  This is a 12"x18" drum leaf bound intaglio book to book borads which are heavily painted with sand in an acrylic medium.   The award winning artist's proof is in private collection. Each book will be bound with some variation in the cover and unique variations in the color of the prints.  Often I will mix color on the plate to get the necessary effect and a luminescence. Limited edition copies (80) are available for $600.00 each.
